Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford started to become fascinated by acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
